The Cat That Changed America tells the story of what P22's life may have been like before he was discovered in Griffith Park.  The story is told from P22's perspective and we learn about his family, friends, and the foe that scares him enough to make crossing two urban highways look like a good option.  In The Cat That Changed America, we also learn about the hazards P22 has to deal with.  Male mountain lions fight over territory... often to the death.  Crossing two urban highways can be a deadly experience.  And, people leave out poison for rats and other small animals to eat.  Life isn't easy for P22, but Tony Lee Moral does a good job of describing events in a kid-friendly way.  Children will feel a sense of anxiety and compassion for P22 and his wellbeing... without feeling overwhelmed by those feelings.  They will also feel relieved and a sense of justice when they discover how P22 inspired people to build animal crossings over busy highways and to find other ways to get rids of rats and other pests without resorting to poisoning them.

  1. Thanks Kelly for bringing awareness to the plight of our mountain lions and for creating some thought provoking questions for our readers to follow up on. This story is particularly timely as the wildlife crossing strikes ground this year.
